History
The Elaine Cemetery was officially opened in 1982.
Approved by his Excellency the Governor of Victoria at the Executive
Council Chamber dated 4 May 1982. The cemetery was required due to the Church community of the St Sava Monastery realising that there was no burial facility for its members at the Monastery. Application was made to the Department of Human Services (now the Department of Health), was approved and the formation and establishment of the Elaine Public Cemetery eventuated.

Mount Doran Cemetery, circa 1800's
There is another cemetery in Elaine which we understand was the original Elaine Cemetery.
After some research we have identified that on 2 April 1885, Mount Doran changed the town’s name to Elaine. Mount Doran was also referred to as Borhoneyghurk. Any investigation on Borhoneyghurk also highlights Morrisons which is not far from Elaine. We are of the understanding that the original cemetery relates to a site in Elaine (Stony Rises) for a Free Presbyterian Church temporarily reserved by Order of 6th January 1864. However, it seems that on 15 March in 1872 some land was reserved from sale as a site for Cemetery. In the Parish of Borhoneyghurk (Morrison's) set aside five acres which could be when the original cemetery was originally established. If you have any further information you would like to share with us regarding the original Elaine Cemetery or the current Elaine Cemetery located in Horsehill Road, we would gratefully accept your feedback.
